The first edition of Procopius’ notorious Secret History of the Court of Justinian.

It had been written in around 550 AD, about the time of Procopius's generous history of the Wars of Justinian. However, due to the invective nature of the present work, it was never circulated in his lifetime.

In the 1620s Niccolo Alamanni discovered a 14th century manuscript of the text in the Vatican Library (VAT. GR. 1001) , and set about producing the present edition, printed in parallel Greek and Latin text.
