Second edition. Octavo. Publisher’s black cloth, lettered gilt to spine, in the original dustwrapper. Signed by the author using his real name Brian O’Nolan to the front free endpaper.
A very good copy in a very good dustwrapper. The dustwrapper has been restored and retouched in several places.
Originally published during the Second World War by Longmans, much of the first edition was destroyed by a German bomb in 1940 after only 240 copies had sold.
It fell out of print, despite praise from James Joyce and Graham Greene, before being reissued in 1960 by MacGibbon and Kee.
The author was not an habitual signer of books, and autographed copies of his masterpiece are rare.
