First edition. Octavo. Two volumes. Original publisher’s orange cloth, lettered gilt to the spines, with gilt vignettes to each upper cover. To the rear of the first volume is a folding map of Damascus, and to the rear of the second volume is a large, linen-backed folding map of Damascus, Hauran and the Lebanon mountains.
A very good set, cloth bindings lightly rubbed. Large folding map rather browned, with creases and repaired tears.
A lovely set of Porter’s account of his missionary work in Damascus and the surrounding areas, with lots of historical detail about the region, covering modern day Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.
Porter introduces the volume by writing:
"The following work is not a book of travels, penned during a 'summer's ramble' or a 'winter's residence'. It is the result of researches extending over a period of more than give years. Though I have wandered through most of Palestine, I have here confined my attention to a few provinces hitherto but little known".
PROVENANCE: Sarah L’Estrange (1789-1861), née Rawson, of Nidd Hall, her ownership inscription and bookplate to each volume. Later Mountgarret bookplate to each volume also.
