Remembrance Of Things Past

Comprising: Swann’s Way; Within A Budding Grove; The Guermantes Way; Cities Of The Plain; The Captive; That Sweet Cheat Gone; Time Regained.

Gore Vidal’s set of Proust. Twelve volumes, all 1950s printings of Scott Moncrieff’s translation. Octavo. Original publisher’s blue cloth. A very good, well-read set.

Gore Vidal’s set of Proust in English. In an interview with Charles Ruas, Gore Vidal suggested that he tried to read Proust in his twenties but “couldn’t” because “you have to be over thirty to enjoy Proust.” He would have been in his late twenties when this edition was published, but he evidently grew into and completed the novel, as several pages of Time Regained are either dog-eared or marked with pencil.

PROVENANCE: From the library of Gore Vidal (1925-2012) at Edgwater, Barrytown-on-Hudson, New York. Edgewater blindstamp, and Vidal’s library stamp to the front free endpaper of each volume. Foyle’s bookseller’s ticket to the front pastedown of each volume.
