Second edition of Du Ryer’s landmark translation of the Quran. 12mo. Bound in fine 18th century French red morocco by Rene Simier, the binding signed by him at the foot of the spine "Simier R[elieur] du Roi." Lettered and decorated gilt, with triple gilt borders, gilt cornerpieces, and compartments to the spine lettered in gilt, and decorated in gilt and blind.
A very good copy, internally clean and attractive, with binding with some rubbing to the joints, with the upper joint starting.
PROVENANCE: Later bookplate of Francis John Hughes to front pastedown.
Du Ryer’s translation of the Quran into French was a landmark moment when it was published in 1647. This handheld edition followed two year later, the same year that Du Ryer’s translation was used as the basis for the first edition of the Quran in English, which was printed in London.
