The first edition of the Indices to the Domesday Book. Folio (436 x 270mm). Bound in a mid-nineteenth century library binding of half-red morocco over red cloth.
A good, ex-library copy, with the expected stamps and markings.
The Domesday Book was first published in 1783, but contained only the text of the Book, so in 1811 the Records Commission published this volume of Indices.
PROVENANCE: Rev. Henry Jenkins (1830-1874), Rector of Stanway, his ownership inscription to the title page, presented by him to; The Colchester Museum on 25th October 1869, with a printed presentation label to the front pastedown, later transferred to; Colchester Public Library, their label to front pastedown and occasional stamps throughout, then deaccessioned and bought by; Richard Barber (1941-), eminent medieval historian.
