First edition. Octavo (165 x 90mm). [48] 504 [60]. Contemporary calf, five raised bands to spine, richly gilt compartments.

A good copy, the binding a little worn and shaken with some wear to the joints. Three early ownership inscriptions to the hald-title page.

The first edition of this collection of witticisms, bon mots, and historical gobbets collected by the Enlightenment raconteur Gilles Menage, and published by his friends after his death.

It is notable for including the first ever publication of sections of Procopius Secret History that were withheld from the original 1623 first edition and the 1654 second edition of that work. Curious about what had been omitted, Menage inspected the manuscript copy of the text in the Vatican Library that those two editions were based on, and transcribed the missing passages himself.
