First edition. Three quarter cloth portfolios, housed in card slipcases. Printed prefaces and lists of plates to each portfolio.

A very good set, some light wear to the slipcases.

This publication sought to reproduce all of the manuscripts of public display in the glazed cases of the Grenville Library of the British Museum. This was achieved with Series I and II, and so Series III focused on 34 manuscripts which were not on public view, including The Lindisfarne Gospels.

The preface to the third series states, “The third series of these reproductions brings the full number now published up to one hundred and fifty, and no more will appear”.

Acquisitions in the next two decades however, including from the libraries of Alfred Huth and Henry Yates Thompson, saw the series revived and reissued in the 1920s, with two further volumes added to the three present here.
