A fine, and uncommonly large, Arts & Crafts binding by Cedric Chivers. Large octavo (binding 258 x 175mm; text 250 x 160mm). Full repoussé brown calf by Chivers (signed to rear turn-in), attractively proportioned gilt borders to covers, two ruled, one pointelle, enclosing to the upper cover floriated decoration, with pointellated gilt details, and a similar design, and hand-etched title, to spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Wrappers bound in.

Finely printed limited edition of Romeo and Juliet, number 159 of 350 copies. Illustrated by Jacques Wagrez and Louis Titz across fifteen plates, engraved headpieces and a title page vignette.

A near fine copy, slightly rubbing to the spine and corners, but nevertheless incredibly attractive.

A lovely and uncommonly large repoussé binding by Cedric Chivers in the Arts & Crafts style.

It was almost certainly the work of Alice Shepherd, who began producing repoussé leather bindings for Chivers in 1892.

In his work on Chivers, Brian Cole notes that “many of her early designs [for leather repoussé bindings] are floral patterns”, as here. She was described by The Magazine of Art as “One of the most successful artists in repousse”.
