First edition. Oblong duodecimo. The dedication copy, from the library of the Duchess of Cleveland, in the publisher’s presentation binding of full red morocco gilt. Gilt on navy silk endpapers.

A very good copy indeed, small chip to the head of the spine.

The dedication copy of a rare work, with no copies recorded in Worldcat or Copac. There is no copy at the British Library, but we have traced one copy at the Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull.

Its association is exceptional, not just for being the dedication copy, but for the dedicatee being the owner of Battle Abbey and author-cum-publisher of the three volume work The Battle Abbey Roll with some Account of the Norman Lineages (1889). The Battle Abbey Roll is the (lost) commemorative list of William The Conqueror’s companions at the Battle Of Hastings. Battle Abbey was erected at the site of the Battle of Hastings by William, with the high altar of the church on the supposed spot where King Harold died.

PROVENANCE: Catherine Lucy Wilhelmina Powlett, Duchess of Cleveland (1819-1901), her bookplate to front pastedown. This work was dedicated to her by the author, with the printed dedication reading, “ To Catherine Lucy Wilhelmina, Duchess of Cleveland, (to whose lively interest in Battle Abbey and its famous historical associations he is indebted for the permission,) this poem is dedicated by her Grace’s obliged and obedient servant, The Author.”
