Second (first published) edition, second state (repriced at one shilling). Quarto. Publisher’s pictorial paper boards by E. Gertrude Thomson over white cloth.

A very good copy. Boards and spine rubbed and discoloured, internal hinge cracked, paper tissue guard spotted and damaged, ownership inscription to front flyleaf.

In 1889, Lewis Caroll adapted his best selling novel Alice in Wonderland into the present work, shorter and illustrated in colour, so that younger audiences could enjoy it too.

The sheets of the first printing of 1889 were deemed too poor quality, and so a new edition was printed and published in 1890 as the second, but first published, edition.

Sales were slightly slower than anticipated, and so in 1896 remaining copies were repriced at one shilling instead of four, with the new price overprinted on the title page and the original pricing was covered by an ornamental bar.
