An exceptional association copy, linking J.R.R. Tolkien with his favourite and most promising protegee in an affectionate inscription. Simonne D'Ardenne studied Middle English under J.R.R. Tolkien in the 1930s and was later a collaborator of his in the translation of medieval texts. In a letter to the British Council, Tolkien described her edition of Saint Juliene as "one of the most important works in the field of Middle English for a generation".
