TENNYSON, Alfred Lord

A stunning jewelled binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. First edition. Octavo. In a fine jewelled binding with five rubies, four amethysts, seven moonstones, seven topazes and mother of pearl dragonfly wings. Bound in green levant morocco, with leather joints, mauve morocco doublures and white silk fly-leaves, all elaborately inlaid and gold-tooled.

A fine copy, exceptionally well-preserved.

A spectacular jewelled binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The firm became well-known for these extravagant bookbindings in the early twentieth century, particularly their infamous Great Omar for the Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam. This example is particularly well-executed, with particular attention given to Tennyson's work, and incorporating its motifs into the design. In all it houses twenty-three jewels, including eight large ones to each corner, and additionally features iridescent mother of pearl dragonfly wings to the front doublure.
