First edition, later issue, with "Printed In England" to the base of the title page, and undated advertisements. Octavo. Bound in the original printed paper wrappers.
A very good copy, with the lower third of the paper covering to the spine missing, and a small chip to the head of the spine also.
J.R.R. Tolkien's first published book. 2,000 copies of this edition were printed in May 1922, and copies were bound as demand required. The earliest copies were bound with advertisements dated October 1921. The present example, has "Printed In England" overprinted at the base of the title page and undated advertisements to the rear. The latest published books in these advertisements were published in 1923, meaning that this was likely bound and issued in either late-1922 or in 1923.
