The rare first edition of Tolkien’s famous lecture on Beowulf, one of only 500 copies printed.

 

This is the most influential study of Beowulf of the 20th century, and one Tolkien delivered the lecture to the British Academy on 25th November 1936, and published in this edition on 1st July 1937. Six months later, it appeared in Vol 22 of Proceedings Of The British Academy (30th December 1937).
