Third edition of Du Ryer’s landmark translation of the Quran. 12mo. Bound in contemporary vellum, manuscript titles to spine. A near fine copy.
PROVENANCE: Robert St George (1811-1893), his ownership inscription to the title page. Two further inscriptions, perhaps in the same hand, indicate that the book was bought in “Brussels, September 1825”, and that its true publisher was “Elzevier”.
Du Ryer’s translation of the Quran into French was a landmark moment when it was published in 1647. A duodecimo edition followed two years later, with Paris and Antoine De Sommavile listed on the imprint, but according to Brunet actually published by Elsevier in Leiden. This third edition was then printed in 1672, likely also by Elsevier.
