A fine armorial binding for Louise Marie Adelaide de Bourbon-Penthievre (1753-1821). She was married to Louis Philippe II, Duc D’Orleans, who changed his name to Philippe Egalite during the Revolution in support of the revolutionary cause. He voted for the death of Louis XVI, but was himself guillotined during the Terror in November 1793.
Marie Adelaide was imprisoned in Luxembourg during the Revolution, and then went into exile in Spain, only returning to France in 1814.
