Third edition. Octavo. Finely bound for Hatchards in very attractive contemporary full purple morocco, finely decroated in gilt, with the monogram MS to the upper cover. A fine copy, exceptionally well-preserved.
A finely bound copy of this rare collection of legends and poems of Westmorland.
As the author explains in the preface to this, the third and best, edition, there were two earlier editions issued in 1856, selling a total of 500 copies:
“Since then I have been repeatedly urged to publish a more extended edition of my peoms, and, at last, after much hesitation, I have yielded to the urgent requests of my friends. My principal object in doing so is to try to keep alive in the public memory many old-time legends of Westmorland and noteworthy local events which, in my opinion, are well deserving of being rescued from oblivion.”
