The Legends anthology was conceived by Robert Silverberg to commission leading fantasy writers to create new original stories set in their worlds. George R.R. Martin was commissioned to contribute to the anthology while he was writing A Clash Of Kings, the second book in A Song Of Ice And Fire.
 
His contribution was titled The Hedge Knight, and was the first in what is now a series known as the Dunk And Egg stories. They were collected into the single volume A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms in 2015, and a HBO series based on The Hedge Knight, also titled A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, aired in 2026.
 
Legends also contains the first publication of stories by other luminaries of the genre; Stephen King, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Anne McCaffrey, Raymond E. Feist, Terry Pratchett, Orson Scott Card, Robert Silverberg, Ursula K. Le Guin and Tad Williams.
