Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a medieval illuminator might be like?
Well, now you have the chance to step back into the medieval world and experience what it is like to create an illumination in this special day course led by artist Lucy Thomasin Morrish and medieval manuscript dealer and historian Sienna Wells.
This hands-on experience invites you to explore traditional techniques of gilding, colour, and decorative design within the beautiful grounds of Howbery Park.
Illumination is naturally a slow and contemplative process, so the day will act as a gentle taster. Students will begin their illuminated initial in the workshop, and Lucy will provide a worksheet for you to take home so you can complete it confidently in your own time. Lucy will make sure everyone feels supported and secure in the techniques before they leave.
The fun doesn't stop there. You will have the opportunity to view real medieval manuscripts from the collections held at Tom W. Ayling, and have a presentation about the material and their history by Sienna.

Whats included:
Tea and coffee on arrival, and lunch are included. We will also have a short break in the afternoon for tea and coffee. All the materials you need for illumination will be provided.
What you'll Learn:
Painting on vellum - how to work on natural calfskin using gentle, layered colour inspired by medieval pigments.
Gilding with 22ct gold leaf - applying genuine gold leaf for luminous, raised details
Using gum ammoniac - preparing and applying this traditional gold size, used by manuscript artists for over a thousand years
Medieval colour techniques - building luminous layers with fine brushes
Suitable for complete beginners as well as returning students, this gentle, heritage rich workshop offers a rare chance to learn illumination in a heritage setting.
Places are limited to maintain a focused and supportive studio atmosphere.
