Octavo. Three volumes. Bound by Birdsall in contemporary full vellum with the Maxwell family crest embossed in gilt to the upper covers of each volume with gilt borders and thistle corner pieces in gilt. Three raised bands to spine with two labels in morocco, lettered and decorated in gilt. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers.

A very good set. The vellum has slightly discoloured and has some scuff marks, fore-edges very slightly foxed, internally very slightly toned.

PROVENANCE: Sir Herbert Maxwell of Monreith (1845–1937) bookplate pasted to pastedown. Comment in ink, most likely from Herbert, stating 'This biography is not genuine' to front endpaper.
