First edition. Octavo. In seven volumes. Bound in full contemporary vellum by Birdsall, with a gilt centrepiece to the upper cover of each volume and gilt borders. Four raised bands to spine with two morocco labels in red and in brown, lettered and decorated in gilt. Top-edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. There is a tipped in partial letter in volume one p. 7 which details an agreement between poet Walter Scott's father Walter Scott (1729–1799) Writer to the Signet and Sir William Maxwell of Monreith (1715-1771) dating 17th February 1785. This set was bought and owned by Maxwell's ancestors, and comes from the library of Monreith House.

A very good set. The covers are slightly scuffed, small chip to the title label on volume three, foxing on endpapers across the set.
