A very rare example of David Bryce’s ’Mite Quran’ printed in gold. 64mo (26 × 18 mm). Original richly gilt decorated red morocco. Printed in gold on fine India paper. Housed in the original locket, with inset magnifying glass.
A fine copy, very well preserved.
An exceptional and rare survival - Bryce’s Miniature Quran printed in gold, one of very few known copies of one of only three miniature books printed in gold. David Bryce produced his extraordinarily popular Miniature Quran in six states, five printed in black, but only one in gold. This is a rare example of the last type. It is based on a Quran by Hafiz Osman in Hijri 1094 (1683AD), which was photographically reproduced in 1871. We have traced just other four examples of Bryce’s gold Quran in commerce. Two come from notable collections of Bryce’s Miniature Books, one sold by PBA Galleries in 2016, and the second sold as part of a single lot Bryce collection at Bonhams on 9th November 2022 (Lot 324, £82,200). A third copy was offered by the British bookseller N.G. McBurney in 2019, but was disbound and wanting leaves. A copy with similar defects is now at the University of Edinburgh. A fourth was sold by us in 2025. The present example is exceptionally well-preserved, notably more attractive than two of the recorded examples and at least on a par with the third.
