A Katherine Adams binding on the Pickering’s Diamond Classic edition of Horace. Binding (88 x 50mm), pages (84 x 46mm. Bound by Kathrine Adams in full blindstamped alum-tawed pigskin, lettered gilt to the spine. All edges gilt and gauffered. Signed by Adams “K.A. 1901” to the rear turn in.
A very good copy indeed, a couple of marks to the covers.
An exceptional Katherine Adams binding, likely made with pigskin gifted to her by Thomas Cobden-Sanderson. Following her March 1901 exhibition of fifty-six bindings at Worcester House, Oxford, the home of the Daniel Press, Emery Walker introduced her to Cobden-Sanderson, “who helped her out by giving her first piece of alum-tawed (white) pigskin, and sold her some niger goatskins from the Doves Bindery” (Tidcombe). This binding, dated 1901 by Adams, is likely one of the first executed by her in this material.
