The second and enlarged Estienne edition of Appianus’s Roman History. Folio. [8], xii, 767, [1], 72, [34].

Bound with:

Appiani Sophistae Alexandrini Illyrica. Quarto. 16pp. Augsburg, Ad Insigne Pinus, 1599.

Bound in full contemporary vellum, gilt arms to covers with the motto “Martis Et Artis Honos”, further decorated in blind. Red morocco title label to spine, though wanting a third of it. All edges blue.

A very good copy, covers a little bowed and dusty. Generally clean internally with a few marks in the text.

PROVENANCE: Sir William Maxwell of Monreith (1715-1771), his bookplate to front pastedown.

The very attractive Estienne parallel edition of Appianus’s Roman History, bound with an uncommon pamphlet; the first printing of Appianus’s Illyrica from the Augsburg codices.
