A bifolium manuscript waste on parchment, c. 440 x 286 mm, with Saint Augustine’s Tractate 94 and 95 on the Gospel of Saint John, which is one of the most significant writings of philosophy and theology in the fourth and fifth centuries.

It is ruled in hard point, c. 385 x 100 mm (column), for two columns of forty to forty-one lines, in Romanesque script in brown ink. There is evidence of red rubrics on the first leaf of the bifolium and the remains of two large red capitals ‘I’ and ‘C’, but most of the ink has come off when it was removed from a binding as a pastedown. With some later, possibly sixteenth-century, annotations.

The text on the first leaf is not legible, but the large ‘C’ is presumably the start of Tractate 94, which begins 'Cum dominus Iesus predixisset’, (‘When the Lord Jesus had predicted’). The first verso continues Tractate 94 on both columns. Text in the second column reads ‘caro quide[m] factu[m] Verbu[m] habito in vobis,’ (‘I, the Word made flesh, dwell in you,’). Tractate 94 follows to the second recto in the first column, ‘Filiu[m] et Sp[iritu]m s[anct]um capacius,’ (‘More capable of the Son and the Holy Spirit’). The second column of the second recto contains text from Tractate 95, ‘Sed ne forte quis dicat hoc ad Judaeos’, (‘But lest perhaps anyone say this to the Jews’). Tractate 95 continues to verso of the second leaf across both columns: ‘Exponit deinde quid dixerit de peccato’, (‘He then explains what he said about sin.’)

This is a good example of a bifolium, it is crudely trimmed with text loss, the first leaf has significant text loss which suggests that it was perhaps used as binding waste material such as paste down that was then later removed, there is also significant worming and scuffing. However, it is a fantastic example of the afterlife of manuscripts and the recovery of them as waste material, particularly with its fascinating subject text.
