A single leaf of Suffrages from a Book of Hours, Use of Sarum, on parchment, c. 204 x 138 mm.
This leaf is lined in pink ink, c. 128 x 78 mm (ruled), in a single column, written on twenty-four lines in a dark brown ink in a gothic script in two different sizes, with rubrics in red, capitals touched in red, one single line initial in blue with red decoration, Six two-line initials in gold on pink and blue grounds with white highlights, modern foliation to the upper corner of the recto, ‘M.988.7’ written in pencil to the lower corner of the verso.
The text contains the Suffrages. The suffrages include dedications to the Holy Spirit, The Holy Trinity, The Cross, Saint Michael, Saint John the Baptist, and Saints Peter and Paul. The First Suffrage to the Holy Spirit begins: Veni, Sancte Sp[iritu]s, reple tuor[um] corda fidelium: et tui amoris in eis ignem accende; (Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love). A very good example, the parchment is bright with very few spots of discolouration and one initial to the recto is slightly rubbed.
