An extraordinary hand-painted bookcase by the Tolkien artist Jay Johnstone, with scenes from The Lord Of The Rings. Height: 180cm. Width: 73cm. Depth: 42cm. The main image to the central door shows the Breaking Of The Fellowship at Amon Hen. Frodo, the ringbearer, is in the foreground, Boromir struggles on the steps behind him, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas are in the background preparing to board a boat, and Gollum is shown following Frodo in the bottom left corner. This main image is surrounded by an arch-topped frame of carved wood coloured with gold, with a Tengwar inscription to the outside of the door. The lower door has four painted panels showing scenes from the story; Boromir and Faramir at Minas Tirith; Gandalf and Pippin there also; Legolas and Gimli at Helm's Deep, and Merry and Pippin at Isengard. The inner panels of the bookcase are painted in deep blue with gold stars. The main door has a painted map of Middle-earth to the rear panel, visible when you open the bookcase. This shows The Journeys Of The Fellowship and is heightened in gold.
 
An extraordinary bookcase, and the most ambitious project yet undertaken by the Tolkien artist Jay Johnstone. The bookcase is inspird by William Burges's pre-Raphaelite Great Bookcase at the Ashmolean Musuem in Oxford. For over a decade, Johnstone has been one of the most revered artists inspired by the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. His work has won countless awards and has featured as cover art on new Tolkien publications. His unmistakable style draws on inspiration from medieval manuscripts and Byzantine art, evoking the the devotional craftsmanship of medieval monasteries and the imagined libraries of Minas Tirith.
