Owen Jones’s sumptuous illuminated Book Of Common Prayer. Quarto. Bound by Remnant and Edmonds in blindstamped burgundy morocco, lettered gilt to spine, and signed by them to front free endpaper verso. A very good copy indeed, a little rubbing to the binding.
Illustrated and decorated throughout by Owen Jones, including eight chromolithographed plates.
“Every page is surrounded by a border designed by Jones, printed letterpress in one or two colours, and there are also eight chromolithograph title-pages by him, as well as other initials and decorations. In addition there are numerous woodcuts of Old Master paintings drawn on wood by George Scharf, Jun., under the superintendence of Lewis Gruner, himself to become a noted chromolithographer. The twelve calendar pages and modern drawings are surrounded with borders of flowers, foliage and fruit, quite different in style from the formalized borders of Owen Jones” (Ruari McLean, Victorian Book Design and Colour Printing).
