Second edition. Quarto. Bound in contemporary marbled paper covered boards with vellum tips, rebacked in twentieth century calf.
A very good copy indeed.
The second edition of Berington’s history of the medieval lovers Abelard and Heloise.
The story was much popularised by Berington’s history and presentation of Heloise and Abelard’s love letters, with Heloise being seen as Abeillard’s forbidden lover, the teacher and the student, almost a real life Romeo and Juliet.
But when one reads their letters, appended to the end of this volume, one sees a real insight into not just their romance, but also Heloise’s feminist views and they establish her as possessing a philosophical mind in her own right.
