“The Killer Bible”. Two volumes. Quarto issue. Contemporary red straight grain morocco with gilt decorated borders. Lettered and decorated to spine. All edges gilt.
A very good set. There is rubbing and pushing to the extremities, with a tear to the pastedown of volume one. Hinges cracked for both volumes but holding. Some offsetting to the pastedown and first free endpaper in both volumes. Foxing to plates and toned within.
PROVENANCE: Nearly two centuries of family records added to free endpapers at the beginning of volume one. The first entry dates from October 1786 by John Stirling of Eldershaw, and the last by Charles Norman Stirling in 1960.
The notable name of “The Killer Bible” derives from a famous misprint in volume two to Mark 7:27 which reads ‘Let the children first be killed’ instead of ‘Let the children first be filled.’
