First edition, first issue of Scott’s impressive narrative poem which was his first considerable original work and a “watershed in the British Romantic Movement” (Grierson) ; a tall copy, with only 750 copies of the first edition printed. Bound in a rather pleasing contemporary full straight-grained Morocco binding. This copy with a fine double fore-edge painting, with two views from Scott’s life to each. On one facet, views of Kelso Bridge and Melrose Abbey, and on the other facet, Abbotsford and Dryburgh Abbey.

A very good example, the binding a little rubbed.

A lovely first edition with sophisticated fore-edge paintings of not only significant locations to the work itself but also in Scott’s life. From a small collection of fore-edge paintings acquired from Henry Sotheran in the 1980s.
