In a binding designed by Douglas Cockerell. Octavo. Bound by the publisher after a design by Douglas Cockerell. Quarter brown morocco, with Arts and Crafts decoration in gilt and blind to the spine. Marbled paper made by Cockerell and his son covers the boards, with vellum tips.
A very good example, early ownership inscription to first blank.
In the 1920s, Douglas Cockerell designed bindings and provided mabrled papers for several books published by the Oxford University Press.
A flyer (not present here), was issued with the volumes, reading:
“The binding of this volume was designed by Douglas Cockerell the world-famed bookbinder, while the marble paper was made by Mr Cockerell and his son.”
“You should notice the corners. These are made of Vellum and are exceedingly hard-wearing and prevent bending.”
“Mr Cockerell has employed this device rather than use leather corners which do not add to the beauty and interrupt the design of the marble paper.”
“Ask your bookseller to show you other Oxford books in Douglas Cockerell bindings.”
