A single leaf on parchment as manuscript binding waste, c. 119 x 150 mm, from a Martyrology containing text from a Roman poet Aurelius Clemens Prudentius and Martinellus, the collected texts on Saint Martin of Tours.
The parchment edges have been folded to create turn-ins. Ruled in dry point, c. 172 x 74 mm and c. 172 x 53 mm (columns), for two columns of twenty-three lines with protogrothic script in black ink, rubrics in red, with a six line initial ‘I’ in red, blue pen flourishes.
The first column text contains twenty-three lines from Aurelius Clemens Prudentius’ (348 AD-413 AD) Crown of Martyrs. The left column begins from line 839, ‘mors sub aspectu Dei’, ‘Death in the sight of God’ to line 1110 ‘anima absoluta vinculis caelum petit’, ‘The soul, free from bonds, seeks heaven.’
The binding waste houses a reprint of the Historical Summary Which Contains The Description Of The Holy House Of Nazareth Or Of The Glory And Majesty Of The Sanctuary Of Our Lady Of Laurette, re-printed in Lyon, 1742 by the Heirs of Pannelli, translated from Italian to French.
The binding waste is in very good condition indeed. Parts of the text and the blue pen flourishes are rubbed and marks to both covers. One small pin prick hole to upper cover, and two to the lower cover, a small tear to the binding edge. The text housed is in good condition. Two ownership inscriptions to binders blank, one dating from the nineteenth century and pen notations to the back endpaper. Burn marks to foot of front endpaper, title page, preface and first page text with text loss. Worming hole that begins on page three to page seventy-one, with text loss from page fifty-five to sixty-eight. Water spots and rings throughout the text. Pages sixty-five to sixty-six are wanting.
